RR Psalm 39:13,14(12,13) Part 7
(Early) Shabbat Shalom,
Psalm 39:13 “Hear my prayer, Adonai, and listen to my cry—do not keep silent at my tears. For with You I am an outsider, a sojourner, as all my fathers were. 14 Turn your gaze away from me, so I may smile again, before I go, and am no more.”
David knew well that God regards tears as a form of prayer (as we just read in Psalm 39:13a). Psalm 61:2 Hear my cry, O God, listen to my prayer. As we finish reading Psalm 39 today, we can’t help but notice the echos from the book of Job. David, like Job considered his condition with God as an outsider (“Ger” in Hebrew. A traveling stranger in a strange land.) and sojourner. (“Toshav” in Hebrew. One who remains in a strange land, taking up residence there.)
Job said this in answering his “friends”… Job 19:14 My relatives have gone away and my close friends have forgotten me. 15 My houseguests and my maidservants consider me a stranger. I have become a foreigner in their eyes. Can’t we hear both Job and David in this?
Also, David implores God turn his gaze away before he perishes. First Job says… Job 7:19a,b Will You never look away from me, or let me alone? 20b Why have You set me as Your target? David echos… Psalm 39:14 “Turn your gaze away from me, so I may smile again, before I go, and am no more.”
However; unlike David (at least in Psalm 39) Job saw the solution and said so… Job 19:25 “Yet I know that my Redeemer lives, and in the end, He will stand on earth. 26 Even after my skin has been destroyed, yet in my flesh I will see God; 27 I myself will see Him with my own eyes, I and not a stranger. My heart grows weak within me.”
May we all find peace as sojourners in the land of Israel, the promised land. Isaiah 32:17 The result of righteousness will be shalom and the effect of righteousness will be quietness and confidence forever. 18 My people will live in a peaceful place, in secure dwellings, quiet resting places. Eyes on Him. Shalom shalom.
