Psalm 30:5(4) – Part 4
Psalm 30:5 Sing praise to Adonai, His faithful ones, and praise His holy name.
What are you gonna do? David tells us here in this “peak verse” of Psalm 30. Every well written song has a “high point” to which it builds, followed by a necessary “let down.” Here, the “faithful ones” or “His Saints,” (Chasi’dav) are invited to offer praise to His holiness (there is no specific reference to His name). Furthermore; the Hebrew instructs us to offer thanksgiving at the remembrance of His holiness.
This “remembrance” is not the opposite of “forgetfulness,” but a memorial that is a testimony of our eternal debt to His kindness. How dare we receive His kindness and not offer a praise of thanks? Yeshua healed ten lepers… but only one returned with thanksgiving…
Luke 17:15 Now one of them, when he saw that he was healed, came back, glorifying God with a loud voice. 16 And he fell at Yeshua’s feet, facedown, giving Him thanks. And he was a Samaritan. 17 Then Yeshua answered and said, “Weren’t ten cleansed? But where are the nine? 18 Weren’t any found who came back to give glory to God except this foreigner?”
Rabbi Trail: The Hebrew word used for “thanks” in our subject verse is “Hodu,” from which we get “Todah,” (You will be thanked). It is also the Hebrew word for the bird, “turkey.” It might be that the organizers of modern Hebrew knew of our American tradition to eat turkey on Thanksgiving, which is not an indigenous bird to Israel. End RT.
It is a regular theme in Scripture to build a memorial as a permanent reminder of a significant spiritual event. For example… Genesis 31:45 So Jacob took a stone and set it up as a pillar, 46 and Jacob said to his relatives, “Gather stones.” So they took the stones and made a pile. Then they ate there on the pile…. 51 Laban said further to Jacob, “Behold, this pile, and this pillar which I’ve set up between you and me: 52 this pile serves as a witness, that I won’t pass by this pillar to go to you, and that you won’t pass by this pile and this pillar to go to me—with evil intent.
The loud pronouncement to offer thanksgiving to God is a spiritual memorial to us of God’s goodness. The Feast of Passover is just such a memorial. Exodus 12:14 This day is to be a memorial for you. You are to keep it as a feast to Adonai. Throughout your generations you are to keep it as an eternal ordinance. The same is true of Yom Teruah. Leviticus 23:24 “Speak to Bnei-Yisrael, saying: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a Shabbat rest, a memorial of blowing (shofarot), a holy convocation.
There are many more such examples. What endures for us until today is our command to sing praises to His name. Psalm 68:5(4) Sing to God, sing praises to His Name. Prepare the road for Him who rides through the deserts, whose Name is Adonai—and rejoice before Him. What else are you gonna do? Shalom shalom.
