Psalm 30:4(3) – Part 3
Psalm 30:4(3) Adonai, You brought my soul up from Sheol. You kept me alive, so I would not go down to the Pit.
Rabbi Trail: Here is a quote from yesterday’s RR… “Well God is not your fairy godmother, nor is He your genie in a bottle. So, we should stop treating Him that way. “ (One test of senility is to quote from yourself.) Then, today there is a link to this message from Asher Intrater on the same subject. He elaborates on prayer like I never did. Enjoy… https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqQ2jGhXARQ End RT.
The contrast in this verse is between being brought up (from Sheol) and being kept alive, so that we would NOT go down (to the Pit). We will see in the coming verses, the difference is between being elevated to be kept alive in joy, or being sent down below in pain and suffering. The contrast is between “Aliyah,” being called up higher, and “Yarad,” to go down or descend.
In Chapter 52, Isaiah, the great prophet, is setting up the most quoted Messianic prophesy of Chapter 53, when he says this… Isaiah 52:13 “Behold, My servant will prosper, He will be high and lifted up and greatly exalted. 14 Just as many were appalled at You—His appearance was disfigured more than any man, His form more than the sons of men. Yeshua experienced this great contrast of being “lifted up and greatly exalted” in verse 13, but “disfigured more than any man” in verse 14. While Yeshua is our example, we are (thankfully due to His grace) not Him. For us, Rudyard Kipling (in his poem “If”) labeled both triumph and disaster as “imposters.” Meaning, you’re never as good as they say you are, and never as bad either.
May our “ups” be maximized by the power of God, and may our “downs” be minimized by that same power. Yeshua offered this… Matthew 23:12 Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and whoever humbles himself shall be exalted. That same thought is repeated throughout Scripture. Isaiah also had the same thought… Isa 57:15 For thus says the High and Exalted One who inhabits eternity, whose Name is Holy: “I dwell in a high and holy place, yet also with a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and revive the heart of the contrite.”
Who gets the last word today? How about Jacob (aka James)… Jacob 4:10 Humble yourselves in the sight of Adonai, and He shall lift you up. Shalom shalom.
