Psalm 31:6(5) – Part 5

Psalm 31:6 Into Your hand I commit my spirit. You have redeemed me, Adonai, God of truth.

Rabbi Trail: Another word about Rabbi Joseph.  In the late 1930s he was sent to Singapore at the age of five by his German family to escape the horrors of the death camp.  He was raised in an ultra-orthodox community there as an orphan, studying the Scriptures and the Talmud until he attained a “Ba’al Koreh” designation.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baal_keriah  That is literally “a lord of the call.”  Figuratively, it is a term that designates someone proficient in chanting Scripture.  There are at least five different tunes which account for all the chanted biblical books, and Rabbi Joseph knew them all.  He also was a student of Hebrew grammar who had memorized the entire Torah and the prescribed cantorial notes (tune) that go with it.

Note: Rabbi Joseph’s son, Frank, leads the remnant of the Jewish community in Corsicana to this day.

Once, in 1994, Rabbi Joseph (the senior) had a major heart attack on the eve of Rosh Hashanah and asked me to fill in for him, which I did along with the president of the synagogue, Dean Milkus (Dean prayed the English and I prayed the Hebrew).  Rabbi Joseph later told me he tested himself in recovery to see if he had lost any of his mind during the major heart surgery by chanting the Rosh Hashanah Torah portion from memory.  He did, but he was always very humble.  End RT.

“Into Your hand I commit my Spirit!”  Sounds familiar, doesn't it….  Yes, these are the words of Yeshua from the cross.  Luke 23:46 And Yeshua, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, ‘into Your hands I entrust My spirit.’” When He had said this, He breathed His last.  Yeshua knew the truth….  Being in the hands of God is our safe place.  Yeshua established this truth with a bold statement.

John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice. I know them, and they follow Me. 28 I give them eternal life! They will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of My hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all. And no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

At that moment, the Judean leaders wanted to stone Him for blasphemy, but it wasn’t blasphemy at all, it was affirmation of our eternal goal to be one with the Father.  Yeshua was the fist among many brethren to do so.  Romans 8:29 For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, so that He might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

We are not supposed to stone the Son of God, but love Him and follow Him.  John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word. The Word was with God, and the Word was God…. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men…. 9 The true light, coming into the world, gives light to every man.  Without Yeshua, we are blind men, stumbling about in darkness.  In Yeshua, we have the light of life.

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for “commit” (as in “I commit My Spirit”) is “Aph’keed,” meaning “I will be officially appointed.”  A form of this same word is used to designate commissioned officers in the Israeli military.  When we place our faith in Yeshua, we also receive an official appointment in the Lord’s army.

It is also curious that the first use of “redeemed” which is a term indicating “trade without money” is in Exodus 13:13 when a donkey is redeemed by a lamb.  Exodus 13:13 Every firstborn donkey you are to redeem with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, then you are to break its neck. But you are to redeem every firstborn male among your sons.  We are all like first born donkeys designated to be redeemed by the Lamb of God, Yeshua.  Shalom shalom.
