Psalm 31:3(2) – Part 2

Psalm 31:3 Turn Your ear to me, rescue me quickly. Be a rock of refuge for me, a stronghold for my deliverance.

The last Hebrew word of this verse is where we want to focus today.  It is written, “L’Hoshi-ay-ni,” meaning “to save me."  Salvation was a Jewish concept before it was a Christian concept.  Come to think of it, what does Christianity have that didn’t start out Jewish?  That’s right, nothing.  Can we expect salvation without a savior?  Jewish people are waiting for the Savior (HaMashiach).  In Hebrew we say “Matzati” (spelled with an aleph) meaning, “I found Him!”

Our Savior has a name, and it is Yeshua.  Many, who don’t know Him use a slang term that sounds similar, “Yeshu.”  This is a derogatory acronym meaning “may his name be blotted out forever.”  Don’t ever let anyone get away with saying that without offering to correct their error.  Names are important.  In our Jewish culture, names are a reflection of a person’s character.  Think of the times names were changed to reflect a change in character.  Yeshua means salvation.  He is the Savior.

Saved from what?  I’m glad you asked.  Eternal (that’s a long time) damnation.  Matthew 25:41 Then He will also say to those on the left, “Go away from Me, you cursed ones, into the everlasting fire which has been prepared for the devil and his angels”…. 46 These shall go off to everlasting punishment, but the righteous into everlasting life.

Death is described on several levels.  There is separation of body and soul/spirit, that’s first death and it is but a shadow of a greater reality.  Then there is separation from the presence of God for eternity, that is the second death.  Only faith in Yeshua can save us from second death.

Revelation 20:6 How fortunate and holy is the one who has a share in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no authority, but they shall be kohanim of God and the Messiah, and they shall reign with Him for a thousand years.

Remember the lyrics, so sing it with me, “Oh Lord, I want to be in that number, when the saints go marching in.”  Shalom shalom.
