RR Psalm 30:1,2 Part 1

Shalom,

Psalm Psa 30:1 A psalm, a song for the dedication of the Temple, of David. 2 I will exalt You, Adonai, for You have lifted me up, and did not let my enemies gloat over me.

A few housekeeping items… Many scholars have divided the 150 Psalms into five books of 30 Psalms each.  This makes Psalm 30 the last Psalm of the first book.  It tells us right up front what the writer intends to accomplish.  “… a song for the dedication of the Temple.”  And yes, it is also a Psalm of David.  The Christian Bible combines verses one and two of the Jewish bible into a single verse.  This will affect the numbering of all the other verses of the Psalm.

As I prayed over what to write on these first two verses of Psalm 30, I was captured by two thoughts.  First, the Hebrew word “Di’li’ta’ni,” translated “You have lifted me up.”  The shoresh is Dalah (Dalet-Lamed-Hey).  The original context of understanding is to draw water up out of a well.  From that, we get the idea that God has brought us up from being dangled in a dangerous place.  God does more than just “lift us up,” He saves us from the dangerous position of being dangled over a well where a fall would be certain destruction.

The second thought to capture my attention concerns my enemies.  This verse makes me think about them, but usually I don’t.  I guess there are those who would rejoice to see me fall into a well, I just don’t dwell over such a thing, at least not until I read this.  Even the thought of my demise setting off a celebration is disconcerting.  But this isn’t about me, it’s about King David, and King David’s enemies were family such as his father-in-law, King Saul and his son, Absalom.

From Psalm 138, a Psalm of David… Psalm 138:7 Though I walk amid trouble, You revive me. You stretch out Your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and Your right hand delivers me.  That “Right Hand” of the Lord is Yeshua.  The prophet, Isaiah, saw it too.  His words should encourage us all, as he speaks on behalf of God.

Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Surely I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand. 11 Behold, all who were angry at you will be ashamed and disgraced. Those who quarrel with you will be as nothing and perish. 12 Though you will look for those who contended with you, you will not find them. Those who warred against you will be as nothing at all. 13 For I am Adonai your God who upholds your right hand, who says to you, “Fear not, I will help you.”

Shalom shalom.
