RR Psalm 31:22 Part 18
Shalom {{firstName}},
Psalm 31:22 Blessed be Adonai, for He has shown me His wonderful love in a besieged city.
This is a simple, well written, verse. As it was originally written, it is made up of only eight Hebrew words. It starts with “Baruch Adonai (Yehovah - YHVH).” I’m sure that is Hebrew well known to everybody. The next few words tell the story about why we bless God. “Ki (Because or on account of) Hif’li (I’ll get to this in a moment) Chas’do (His tender mercy, lovingkindness and grace)”
There is something about that middle word that is exceptional. The Shoresh is “Pey-Lamed-Aleph,” Palah, which means wonderful, miraculous, and marvelous. It is one of Yeshua’s names in Isaiah 9, “Pelle Yo’aytz,” meaning wonderful counselor. It connotes greatness in a separate distinctiveness that is remarkable. The structure of the word in this verse is a verb. There is action! Something is happening, and it is happening to us. God is pouring out His wonders upon us.
Then the verse ends with “B’ir Matzor,” meaning in a besieged city. In ancient times, all armies were mercenary, meaning the soldiers shared in the wealth of the cities they conquered. They would surround a city and squeeze the life out of it until the citizens surrendered. This is how Satan operates today. He and his minions purpose to squeeze the life out of you and me until we surrender.
Luke 22:31 “Simon, Simon! Indeed, satan has demanded to sift you all like wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith will not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
“Satan has demanded to sift you all like wheat.” That means both you and I are included. “BUT… I (Yeshua) have prayed for you.” Yeshua has prayed for our faith so that we can strengthen our brothers. The psalm has already referenced the difference between being hemmed in on every side and being set free in open spaces. This is another such reference.
When Yeshua was tempted by satan, (satan was quoting Scripture to Yeshua, but misapplying it) Yeshua accurately applied the Scriptures and quoted them right back. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword—piercing right through to a separation of soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
So let’s just close today with this… John 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed! 1John 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning; rather, the One born of God keeps him safe, and the evil one cannot touch him. Jacob 4:7 Therefore submit to God. But resist the devil and he will flee from you. Shalom shalom.
