RR The Throne By David Harwood

Shabbat Shalom,

I think this is one of the most encouraging exhortations in the Bible.

Therefore let us draw near to the throne of grace (charis/favor) with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace (charis/favor) for help in time of need. (Hebrews 4:16)

What are the characteristics of this Throne? It is the Throne of Grace (charis/favor). It is the Throne of Favor and the “help in time of need”, which proceeds from this throne, is like a flowing river.

Then the angel showed me a river of the water of life—bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb  (Revelation 22:1)

The River of Life. A river’s source is found in hills, or mountains. It flows downstream from the highest place to the lowest. A river is consistent. Of what does this consistent life consist? Let’s examine the attributes of its source.

This River of Life’s source is God’s throne which is the highest place of all. This throne’s primary characteristic is Favor (charis/grace). The river reveals the nature of its source.

Question: What comes from Father’s throne? Answer: Mercy and favor (charis/grace) to help in time of need. Picture a river that is comprised of mercy. Mercy is the English translation of eleos which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew, chesed. Briefly, chesed means intervening love.

Mercy is coming from the throne. Mercy is expressed here as favor (charis/grace) given to a supplicant who is in trouble. Mercy and favor are expressed as answered prayer.

In Hebrews 4:16 we’re encouraged to draw near to God’s throne. James 4:8 promises that if we draw near to God, He will come near to us. We draw near to the enthroned One whose inner disposition is favorable - kind and responsive.

A throne is the seat of a ruler’s authority. In this case our Ruler’s authority is expressed in favor. Our King is so favorably disposed towards us that the decrees issued from His throne are reliable manifestations of mercy and favor. This river does not stop flowing.

The Scripture teaches that Yeshua is the co-ruler of creation, and creation has a focal point. It is where God has located Himself. He is located in the Messiah who is located at God’s throne. Yeshua said that if the disciples saw Him they were seeing the Father (John 14:9) and Yeshua is where Father is. He is at our Father’s right hand. He is with God and He is God. (John 1:1)

God’s throne is the center of all there is, seen and unseen. It is where the Creator has placed Himself. Yeshua, the resurrected and glorified man, has been invited by Father to be in close fellowship and partnership with Him. This is part of the message of Psalm 110.

I hope you are familiar with this verse.

Adonai declares to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for Your feet.” (Psalm 110:1)

This is part of the foundational apostolic understanding of who Yeshua is, and where He is.

Then the Lord Yeshua, after He had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven and sat down at the right hand of God. (Mark 16:19)

I really love this verse:

He has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels and authorities and powers subjected to Him. (1 Peter 3:22)

Our Messiah is higher than the highest angelic majesty.

But to which of the angels has He ever said, “Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet”? (Hebrews 1:13)

Yeshua is at the right hand of God. How did He get there? Father exalted Him. Please note, His being exalted is a demonstration of God’s favor. Why would I say that? Look at this:

“God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may lift you up at the appropriate time. (1 Peter 5:5b–6)

Messiah’s exaltation to Father’s throne is the measure of the favor He received due to the extraordinary humility He embraced.

He humbled Himself— becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason God highly exalted Him and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Yeshua every knee should bow, in heaven and on the earth and under the earth, and every tongue profess that Yeshua the Messiah is Lord— to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:8–11)

Is it any wonder that it is called the Throne of Favor? Yeshua is at God’s right hand, enthroned, as a result of favor. Nobody ever deserved the favor Yeshua merited and Messiah’s merited favor is directed towards us while we are in a mutual abiding relationship with the glorified Son of Man.

Yeshua has been  exalted to the right hand of God (Acts 2:33a) and He favors you.

The following are verses that may help to enrich this meditation’s theme.

“If You are Mashiach, tell us.” But Yeshua said to them, “If I tell you, you will never believe; and if I ask you, you will never answer. But from now on, the Son of Man is seated at the right hand of the power of God.” Then they all said, “Are You then Ben-Elohim?” And to them He said, “You say that I am.” (Luke 22:67–70)

This One God exalted at His right hand as Leader and Savior ... (Acts 5:31a)

Who is the one who condemns? It is Messiah, who died, and moreover was raised, and is now at the right hand of God and who also intercedes for us. (Romans 8:34)

Therefore, if you have been raised up with Messiah, keep seeking the things above—where Messiah is, sitting at the right hand of God. (Colossians 3:1)

But on the other hand, when this One offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God—(Hebrews 10:12)

focusing on Yeshua, the initiator and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame; and He has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God. (Hebrews 12:2)

And I heard every creature in heaven and on the earth and under the earth and on the sea and everything in them, responding, “To the One seated on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honor and glory and power forever and ever!” And the four living creatures kept saying, “Amen!” And the elders fell down and worshiped. (Revelation 5:13–14)

After these things I looked, and behold, a vast multitude that no one could count—from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues—was standing before the throne and before the Lamb. They were clothed in white robes, with palm branches in their hands and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God, who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!” (Revelation 7:9–10)
