Psalm 41:3b You will not give him over to the desire of his foes. 4 Adonai will strengthen him on his sickbed. May You restore him completely from his bed.

Today, we focus on the last part of verse 3(2) (the 5th conditional promise), and all of verse 4(3) (the 6th conditional promise).  The last part of verse 3(2) is translated in the TLV, Psalm 41:3b …“You will not give him over to the desire of his foes.  Another translation of the last part of verse 3(2) according to the Hebrew is, “You will not give him into the soul of his enemies.”

This appears as a familiar refrain in the Psalms. For instance,… Psalm 25:2 O my God, in You I trust, so I will not be ashamed, and my enemies will not gloat over me.  We find a related question in several Psalms.  Psalm 94:3 How long will the wicked, Adonai, how long will the wicked gloat?

I know, you’re feeling secure, thinking this was written long ago when everyone had enemies.  Today, in modern times, I don’t have any enemies.  Oh really?  The tension between good and evil has never been greater.  If you belong to God, His enemies are your enemies.  Psalm 139:21 Do I not hate those who hate You, Adonai? Do I not loathe those who rise against You? 22 I hate them with total hatred—I consider them my enemies.

Although the battle continues, the outcome is never in doubt.  1Corinthians 15:57 But thanks be to God, who keeps giving us the victory through our Lord Yeshua the Messiah!  The promise is sure, and we can count on it.  Psalm 92:9 But You, Adonai, are exalted forever. 10 For behold, Your enemies, Adonai—behold Your enemies perish—all evildoers are scattered.

And finally, the sixth conditional promise (remember, the conditional statement is in verse 2(1b) “Happiness (blessing) to those who treat the feeble with wisdom and understanding.”  This final blessing also applies.  The translation into English makes this seem like a physical health issue, (Psalm 41:4(3) Adonai will strengthen him on his sickbed. May You restore him completely from his bed.) but the Hebrew words are those of emotional and spiritual well-being.

This is consistent with… Isaiah 40:31 but they who wait for Adonai will renew their strength. They will soar up with wings as eagles. They will run, and not grow weary. They will walk, and not be faint. And Paul, who wrote… Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything—but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the shalom of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Messiah Yeshua.

Eyes on Him!  Shalom shalom.
