RR Psalm 40:15(14) Part 12
Shalom,
Psalm 40:15 Let those who seek my life to sweep it away be put to shame and humiliated. Let those who wish me evil be turned back in disgrace.
Verse 15 is a prayer unto the Lord. In it is one request spoken several different ways. “Oh Lord, shame and disgrace my enemies (and not me).” This is a profound theme that flows throughout the Bible. Psalm 25:2 O my God, in You I trust, so I will not be ashamed, and my enemies will not gloat over me. We will also find this theme in the very next Psalm. Psalm 41:12 By this I know that You delight in me: that my enemy does not shout in triumph over me.
This prayer affirms that the Lord will execute justice (and not we, ourselves). Deuteronomy 32:35a Vengeance is Mine, and payback, for the time when their foot staggers. Just a few verses later, the Lord promises… Deuteronomy 32:41 when I sharpen My lightning sword and My hand seizes it in judgment, I will return vengeance on My foes, and those who hate Me I will pay back.
The Lord knows it is hard for us not to fight back ourselves. But this is His challenge to His people. Wait on the Lord and let Him fight in the day of battle. First, in the Exodus, the Lord led Israel into a situation in which there was no way out. Then, and only then, did the sea part. Exodus 14:14 “Adonai will fight for you, while you hold your peace.”
God wants His people to do the same today. Deuteronomy 1:29 “Then I said to you, ‘Don’t tremble or be afraid of them. 30 Adonai your God, who goes before you, He Himself will fight for you—just as He did for you in Egypt before your own eyes.
The objective is to hold onto faith, and reject fear. Joshua 1:9 “Have I not commanded you? Chazak! Be strong! Do not be terrified or dismayed, for Adonai your God is with you wherever you go.” Yet, there is a key to this Joshua-like faith. It is found in the previous verse… Joshua 1:8 This book of the Torah should not depart from your mouth—you are to meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. For then you will make your ways prosperous and then you will be successful.
When we stand firm in faith, God honors our faithfulness. Revelation 12:11 They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives even in the face of death. A life of faith is our destiny! Romans 8:38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Messiah Yeshua our Lord. Shalom shalom.
