RR Psalm 40:8(7) Part 6

Shalom,

Psalm 40:8 Then I said: “Here I am, I have come—in the scroll of a book it is written about me.”

Rabbi’s note: Significantly, these few verses of Psalm 40 are quoted in Hebrews 10:5-9.  The writer of Hebrews is seeking to verify the New Covenant, and quotes these verses as evidence of the established new order.

I love this… the verse is divided (like the preponderance of other verses) into two parts, easily identified in the TLV by the hyphen.  The author is writing in the first person, quoting Himself (and the quote won’t end until verse 9, which we will study tomorrow).  He begins this verse with a Hebrew preposition, “Az.”  It can mean “until” or “at that time.”  This tells us the speaker is speaking of another time, not right now (as he is writing these words of Psalm 40).

“Behold, I have come!”  These are the words that excited the “Beloved” (Bride of Messiah) in Song 2:8 The voice (the Bride of Messiah is delighted to hear His voice) of my Lover (our Savior, Yeshua)! Behold, he is coming—leaping over the mountains, springing over the hills!

Yeshua Himself makes this promise to those of us who wait for Him.… John 14:18  I will not abandon you as orphans; I will come to you.  Read the context.  Yeshua has already identified Himself as “The Father.”  John 14:9  Yeshua said to him, “Have I been with you for so long a time, and you haven’t come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?

Now, (further into the same chapter) Yeshua is identifying Himself as the Holy Spirit.  John 14:17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him. You know Him, because He abides with you and will be in you.  No wonder the Scriptures declare… Colosians 2:9 For all the fullness of Deity lives bodily in Him, (which becomes our blessing…) Colossians 2:10 and in Him you have been filled to fullness. He is the head over every ruler and authority.

Psalm 40:8b “…in the scroll of a book it is written about me.”  The Hebrew for scroll is “Megillah,” and the Hebrew for “book” is “Safer,” from “Sipur” meaning story.  The scroll of the book tells the story of Yeshua.  Every page, even every verse is a revelation of the Gospel.  The Gospel is the answer to the question, “Who is Yeshua?”  All of Scripture is fulfilled in Him.

Matthew 16:15 He said, “But who do you say I am?” 16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17 Yeshua said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but My Father who is in heaven!  Shalom shalom.
