RR Some Favorite Fare Wells By David Harwood
Shabbat Shalom {{firstName}},
This verse is one of my favorite blessings.
The grace (charis/favor) of the Lord Yeshua the Messiah and the love of God and the fellowship of the Ruach ha-Kodesh be with you all. Amen. (2 Corinthians 13:13)
I have difficulty remembering things I want to memorize. I value this closing greeting so much that I worked with it to help me recall it. Alliteration helps. I may say something like this:
“The Messiah’s favor, the Father’s affection, and the Spirit’s fellowship be with you”
In the midst of this trinitarian benediction, Paul emphasized Yeshua’s charis. I think this is worth considering. To help us focus on this, allow me to ask: Have we found favor (charis/chen) in Yeshua’s eyes? The answer must be, “Yes.”
This is worthy of meditation. When Yeshua sees you, He loves who He sees, and that love, which you provoke, motivates His charis towards you. As we discovered when surveying the opening and closing greetings, Yeshua is known for being favorably disposed towards those He loves.
This is a well-known saying, and it should be well known, “Yeshua loves you!” How many times have we heard it? I think I’m going to start saying, “Yeshua favors you!” After all, it’s true.
How strong is His favor? This strong: He favors you to the same degree that Father loves you. He favors you according to the same measure that the Ruach of God has, in love, joined Himself to our spirits and fellowships with us. That’s quite a bit of favor. (Understatement.) It is rich in love. It is a way that God’s love expresses itself towards us.
Paul prayed that the Ephesians would know the breadth, length, height and depth of Yeshua’s love (Ephesians 3:18–19a). The dimensions of the Messiah’s love describe the magnitude of Yeshua’s favor towards you.
Let’s follow this up with another fare-well. In it we find something specific about a form of favor that was important to Paul.
The grace (charis/favor) of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah be with your spirit... (Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; Philemon 25; 2 Timothy 4:22)
The identical words are found in the closing greetings of Galatians, Philippians, Philemon, and their exact sense are found in 2 Timothy: “Yeshua’s favor be with your ruach.”
This is neither a wish nor a prayer. It is a blessing, released in faith with the expectation that recipients of the letter would receive an impartation of favor. What is the sphere of this favor? Their human spirits.
This farewell focuses upon the enabling favor of God’s Ruach being active with and through each disciple’s spirit. From what I understand, the human spirit is regenerated in the rebirth and is the initial transmitter of the sense of God’s active presence.
Yeshua’s enabling favor (charis/grace) within our spirits enhances our knowledge of God, empowers our perseverance in faithfulness, and helps us serve Him and the brethren (Romans 1:9). The Holy Spirit empowered human ruach sings and prays (1 Corinthians 14:14–15). Yeshua’s enabling favor in our spirits helps us commune with Him and His Father. Enabling charis empowers our spirits to bear the fruit of the Spirit, to hear Yeshua’s voice, and so much more.
In addition, the Ruach ha-Kodesh sanctifies, and Paul warned that a believer’s spirit might be defiled (2 Corinthians 7:1). Certainly, Yeshua’s favor being with our spirit would have an effectively sanctifying effect. Of the human spirit it is written that it may be willing, but it is fundamentally unable to overcome certain temptations (Matthew 26:41; Mark 14:38). The Messiah’s favor acting upon our spirit will empower us to overcome the weakness of our fallen, frail, human nature, and strengthen our capacity to conquer sin in times of crisis.
Let’s close this meditation with the two benedictions we’ve considered.

The grace (charis/favor) of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah be with your spirit... (Galatians 6:18; Philippians 4:23; Philemon 25; 2 Timothy 4:22)
So be it. Adonai is faithful.
