Psalm 36:12,13(11,12) – Part 7
Psalm 36:12 May the foot of pride never tread on me, nor the hand of the wicked drive me away. 13 There the evildoers lie fallen—thrown down, not able to rise!
We bring Psalm 36 to a close with a final petition to God to deal harshly with prideful and wicked evildoers. May they… “lie fallen - thrown down, not able to rise!” May we not be victimized by either their foot or their hand. Dear Lord, don’t let them step on me (with their prideful attitudes), and Lord, prevent them from driving me away from You with their hands. Instead, Lord, let them be the ones who are fallen and unable to rise.
In other words, what they want to do to me, let it be done to them. In verse 12, we are asking God for protection against evildoers and in verse 13 it is done just as we asked in the previous verse. We’re actually going to pick this up in the next Psalm.
Psalm 37:1 Of David. Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of them who do wrong. 2 For like the grass they soon wither and fade like a green herb.
There is shame coming, but not for the people of God. Isaiah 41:11 Behold, all who were angry at you will be ashamed and disgraced. Those who quarrel with you will be as nothing and perish. 12 Though you will look for those who contended with you, you will not find them. Those who warred against you will be as nothing at all.
Near the end of the Ashre, one of the most utilized liturgical prayers made up mostly of Psalm 145, once again we find the theme of the protection for those who love God matched together with the destruction of the wicked. Psalm 145:20 Adonai watches (Shomair, is a watchman, in Hebrew) over all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy. Here is some free advice… love God and obey Him as you receive Him as Lord of your life, and He will watch over you. Shalom shalom.
