RR Manifestations of Favor in Speaking and Knowledge By David Harwood

Shabbat Shalom,

In our last meditation we referenced Romans 12:3.

For through the grace (charis/enabling favor) given me, I say ... (Romans 12:3a)

The Apostle revealed that he spoke through God’s enabling favor. He exemplified the unique favor (charis) given to those who speak on behalf of the King. Let’s reread 1 Corinthians 1:4-7.

I always thank my God for you because of God’s favor (charis/grace) that was given to you in Messiah Yeshua. For in Him you were made rich in every way—in all speaking and all knowledge— just as the evidence of Messiah was confirmed among you. So you are not lacking in any spiritual gift (charisma – a manifestation of favor/grace) ... (1 Corinthians 1:4–7a)

It is evident that God’s grace towards the Corinthians was manifested through these charismata.

The scriptures testify that there is enabling favor given to those who must speak to instruct, or testify, according to their calling. Our Messiah experienced this. Yeshua’s words were graced by the Father. His speech was foretold in Psalm 45.

Grace (chen/charis/favor) pours from your lips. (Psalm 45:3b)

His words imparted revelatory wisdom that revealed His authority.

All were speaking well of Him and marveling at the gracious (charis) words coming out of His mouth. And they were saying, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” (Luke 4:22)

His words were a fountain of favor.

We are His disciples. We are instructed, “Let your speech always be with grace (charis), seasoned with salt, to know how you ought to answer everyone. (Colossians 4:6)”

This describes the result of God’s favor (charis/grace) enabling a believer’s speech. His favor rests upon those who belong to Him. The Spirit can provide a charisma (manifestation of favor) of wisdom appropriate to every occasion. God often empowers counselors to speak with wisdom.

Plans fail when there is no counsel, but with many advisers they succeed. A person has joy in an appropriate answer— how good is a timely word. (Proverbs 15:22–23)

The “timely word” spoken by graced advisers is suitable for the need of the moment. It is appropriate to the season of life of the one needing advice. Such words provide wise plans. They impart enabling favor, manifest as wisdom, which addresses an immediate need.

Let no harmful word come out of your mouth, but only what is beneficial for building others up according to the need, so that it gives grace (charis/favor), to those who hear it. (Ephesians 4:29)

We are promised wisdom when we’re in trouble with secular, or religious, authorities. Consider this prophetic promise.

When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what to say. Say whatever is given to you in that hour, for it is not you who speaks but the Ruach ha-Kodesh. (Mark 13:11)

Yeshua experienced this. For instance, when He was put on the spot and asked why Moses allowed divorce He spoke a word of wisdom.

Yeshua said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.” (Matthew 19:8)

This was an example of the Messiah, having found favor in Father’s eyes, receiving enabling charis to know how to respond. His speech was “seasoned with salt.”

It is written that through God’s grace the Corinthians “were made rich in every way—in all speaking and all knowledge.” In comparison to the fullness of favor (charis) Yeshua experienced, they were paupers.

We will continue our consideration of some manifestations of favor in speech and knowledge, exemplified in the Messiah, in our next meditation.

Meanwhile, do not be intimidated when called upon to testify to the reality of our King. Remember, Yeshua said, “Say whatever is given to you in that hour, for it is not you who speaks but the Ruach ha-Kodesh (Mark 13:11b).”
