Charismata are manifestations of charis (favor/grace).

I’d like to briefly explore the emotion of favor/charis/chen which motivates them.

To get a sense of the flavor of the charismata, let’s consider 1 Peter 4:8-11. Look at the culture of the gifted community. Consider the flavor of their fellowship.

Above all, keep your love (agape) for one another constant, for “love (agape) covers a multitude of sins.”

Be hospitable one to another without grumbling.

As each one has received a gift (charisma), use it to serve one another, as good stewards of the many-sided grace (charis/favor). of God.

Whoever speaks, let it be as one speaking the utterances of God. Whoever serves, let it be with the strength that God supplies. So in all things may God be glorified through Messiah Yeshua—all glory and power to Him forever and ever! Amen. (1 Peter 4:8–11)

In this passage the gifts are contextualized within the warmth of welcoming, loving, hospitality. They are for the purpose of serving those who are loved and, therefore, favored.

Take a look at the word charisma as defined in the New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology and Exegesis: “χάρισμα ... (charisma), favor, gift”.

A charism is a gift which manifests charis. A gift between people is an expression of favor (charis/chen). Think of birthdays. One gives a gift to a favored person.

A spiritual gift is a spiritual manifestation of God’s favor. The charismata (manifestations of favor) are exercised through individuals for the benefit of those who are favored.

For instance, the charism of prophecy is a manifestation of favor (charis/grace) towards the community. It builds up believers, each of whom are favored by God. Another example are the gifts of healing. Healing is a charisma (a manifestation of grace/favor) given for the benefit of someone who needs health.

All charismata demonstrate the emotion of favor. They are charis in action. They are given for those who have found favor in God’s eyes, directed toward those who are loved by God and, thus, are favored.

The only charism mentioned in 1 Corinthians 12-14 that seems to be oriented towards the benefit of the one employing it is “tongues.” It builds up the speaker and strengthens their relationship with God. However, the one who is edified is placed in the Body for the purpose of loving, serving, and edifying others. Through the effect it has on the disciple, even the charism of tongues ends up being a manifestation of favor for others.

Let’s close this meditation on active favor with Romans 12:6-8. Please read it and consider the implications of charis/favor.

We have gifts (charismata/manifestations of favor/grace) that differ according to the (favor/charis/grace) that was given to us—if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; or the one who teaches, in his teaching; or the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who gives, in generosity; the one who leads, with diligence; the one who shows mercy, with cheerfulness. (Romans 12:6–8)

The believing community is favored by God. One way this charis is revealed is through charismata. The charismata of the Ruach ha-Kodesh are for those who receive the benefit of those gifts: favored ones.

We receive gifts to give.

A result of God’s active grace in our lives is enabling favor to edify others.

You are favored to favor others.
