RR Psalm 47:1-4(1-3) Part 2

Shalom,

Psalm 47:1(1) For the music director, a psalm for the sons of Korah.
2 Clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of joy! 3(2) For Adonai Elyon is awesome, a great King over all the earth. 4(3) He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

Yesterday, we began our study of Psalm 47 with an analysis of the contrast between a joyful people in the presence of a Great God and King, Who is Himself to be feared.  Yes, it is counterintuitive that our great God Who is to be feared (awesome) is greeted with “the voice of joy” by all people.

Psalm 33:8 Let all the earth fear Adonai. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him.

A “fear” response can be commanded.  “You better be afraid of me, or else!”  However; it is impossible to threaten someone into a joyous response.  Such gladness is not an involuntary response, but the joy that overflows voluntarily from the lives of those who are overjoyed at the goodness of God.

Philippians 4:4 Rejoice in the Lord always—again I will say, rejoice!

Let me tell you a brief version of my salvation story.  Yours may be similar.  I was not beaten into submission with threats of hell (a fear response).  Instead, I was loved into the kingdom until I wanted to have the same shalom in me that I saw in the lives of those who were loving me with Yeshua’s love.

John 13:34 “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, so also you must love one another. 35 By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

This is called “the love that surpasses knowledge.”  Ephesians 3:19 and to know the love of Messiah which surpasses knowledge, so you may be filled up with all the fullness of God.  What we know should make us fear God, but the love of God demands another great exchange.  We exchange fear for joy.  1John 4:18a There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear.  And finally, we are left with joy.

Nehemiah 8:10b “For today is kadosh to our Lord. Do not grieve, for the joy of Adonai is your strength.”  And may it be so for you too.  Shalom shalom.
