RR Psalm 49:7-9(6-8) Part 4

(Early) Shabbat Shalom,

Psalm 49:7(6) Or those trusting in their wealth, boasting about their great riches? 8(7) No man can redeem his brother, or give to God a ransom for him. 9(8) For the redemption of a soul is costly—so, one should stop trying forever.

The “riddle” mentioned in verse 5(4) is now being told.  It is the riddle of redemption.  According to verse 7(6), you can’t buy your way into redemption.  Isaiah 52:3 For thus says Adonai: “You were sold for nothing. So you will be redeemed without silver.”  Well, if we can’t purchase our redemption, then how do we get it?  Ephesians 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Messiah….7 In Him we have redemption through His blood—the removal of trespasses—in keeping with the richness of His grace.

You may already know, we are saved by faith.  Ephesians 2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not from yourselves—it is the gift of God. 9 It is not based on deeds, so that no one may boast.  We can’t redeem each other nor can we pay someone else’s way into God’s good graces.  1Corinthians 6:20 For you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body.

Watch out that no-one deceives you in this… 2Peter 2:1b …they will secretly bring in destructive heresies. They will even deny the Master who bought them—bringing swift destruction upon themselves.  We all (Jewish people and non-Jewish people alike) need the savior.  As Peter testified… Act 4:12  “There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved!”

The word “redemption” is peculiar per se.  By definition, redemption is done without currency.  When currency is used, what is purchased is simply bought with money.  Redemption involves acquisition with something other than money.  The redemption of our souls requires the perfect sacrifice only offered to us through the death and resurrection of our Lord, Yeshua.  Our perfection is based entirely on His perfection and not our own.

Hebrews 13:20 Now may the God of shalom, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep by the blood of an everlasting covenant, our Lord Yeshua, 21 make you complete in every good thing to do His will, accomplishing in us what is pleasing in His sight, through Messiah Yeshua. To Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Shalom shalom.
