RR Psalm 42:1,2(1) Part 1

Shalom,

Psalm 41:1 For the music director, a contemplative song of the sons of Korah. 2 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, O God.

Psalm 42, like some others, is labeled, “A contemplative song.”  The Hebrew word is “Maschil.”  The Shoresh is “Sachal” (Sin-Kaf-Lamed) meaning, “intelligence, understanding, reason, and even intellect.  I like the word wisdom.  It describes the ability to size up a situation, consider various possible solutions and make the correct choice.  The word “discernment” comes to mind.

The first thing mentioned is how a deer desires streams of water.  Several commentators have likened this word picture to a deer running from a pack of wolves.  He will use streams of water to mask his scent.  Streams of water is more than a solution to thirst, it is a solution to safety.

Psalm 91:2 I will say of Adonai, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. 3 For He will rescue you from the hunter’s trap and from the deadly pestilence.”

This is more than physical relief.  It is my SOUL that is longing for God.  Psalm 1:1a Happy is the one who has not walked in the advice of the wicked, 2a But his delight is in the Torah of Adonai, 3 He will be like a planted tree over streams of water, producing its fruit during its season. Its leaf never droops—but in all he does, he succeeds.

Does that describe you?  If it doesn’t yet, it will.  Psalm 105:4 Seek Adonai and His strength, seek His face always.  Never give up on God.  Isaiah 40:31 but they who wait for Adonai will renew their strength. They will soar up with wings as eagles. They will run, and not grow weary. They will walk, and not be faint.

Pursue God and prosper.  Shalom shalom.
