Psalm 29:8 – Part 8
Psalm 29:8 The voice of Adonai shakes the desert. Adonai shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
This verse in Hebrew is amazing poetry, and like most verses of Scripture, it has two parts. The first part consists of four Hebrew words, “Kol” (voice), “Adonai” (YHVH), “Yachiel” (shakes), “Midbar” (desert). The second part reuses three of those words exactly, in different order, but replaces the first word, “Kol” (voice) with the last word, “Kadesh” (holy). The message is that we must listen to God’s holy voice. But what is the Holy Spirit saying through this symmetrical poetry? What is the deeper message for us today? We will see.
The desert is widely understood to be a void. To “shake a desert” is to cause a shaking (vibration), with only the sound of His voice, in a place where there isn’t much to begin with, hence the word “deserted.” Furthermore, the desert in Scripture is well known to be the place where we go (empty of distractions) to hear from God. Luke 5:16 Yet He (Yeshua) would often slip away into the wilderness (desert) and pray.
Even the Hebrew word for “desert” (Midbar) is related etymologically to the Hebrew word for “‘speak” (Midaber). God is always speaking. The question for us is simply, are we listening? Psalm 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the flock of His hand. Today, if you hear His voice. The very next verse gives us a prerequisite to hearing God. Psalm 95:8a “Do not harden your heart….”
A soft heart is a coachable heart. A soft heart can receive correction from the Lord. A hard heart cannot receive. It is resistant to direction from God’s loving command. Everything that can be shaken will be shaken. God is raising up a people who will be unshakable.
Haggai 2:6 For thus says Adonai-Tzva’ot: “In just a little while I will shake the heavens and the earth, the sea and the dry land, 7 and I will shake all the nations. The treasures of all the nations will come, and I will fill this House with glory,” says Adonai-Tzva’ot.
In Israel, the olive trees are shaken to drop the harvest. The shaking of the nations will produce treasures that will fill the house of the Lord, which house you are. 1Corinthians 3:16 Don’t you know that you are God’s temple and that the Ruach Elohim dwells among you?
May we all be filled with the abundance of God’s harvest. This is the result of God’s people being in a place where He is shaking everything that can be shaken, but being unshakable ourselves. Psalm 55:23(22) Cast your burden on Adonai, and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken. Shalom shalom.
