RR Psalm 40:10(9) Part 8
Shalom,
Psalm 40:10 I proclaim good news of righteousness in the great assembly. Behold, I am not shutting my lips—Adonai, You know!
The Hebrew Scriptures have a word for “the Gospel,” and here it is. “Basar” in Hebrew it is the same word used for “flesh.” The “Gospel” is (of course) “The Good News” which in the Hebrew mindset is “fresh meat,” life giving, life changing news.
Rabbi Trail: I want to share a Yiddish word that comes to mind. The word is “Nu” (pronounced like the word “new”). It is a shortcut convention that is always asked in the form of a one syllable question. When one Jewish person approaches another Jewish person, and the two have some “catching up” to do, the first one says, “Nu?” It means, “What is new with you?” Then the other offers a quick update. If you’re a “MOTT,” Member Of The Tribe, you just know these things. if you want to keep the update short, you just reply “Gornish,” meaning “nothing is new.” Incidentally, “Gornish” can also be a past tense verb, “Gornished” as in “I’ve got nothing new.” End RT.
The first four books of the New Testament are referred to in Hebrew as the “Besorah,” meaning “the Gospel” as a noun. So let’s return to our subject verse. What is the “good news of righteousness?” It is the news of exactly who Yeshua is as revealed to the Shepherds. Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid! For behold, I proclaim Good News to you, which will be great joy to all the people. 11 A Savior is born to you today in the city of David, who is Messiah the Lord.
What’s more, all of heaven rejoiced at this good news. Luke 2:13 And suddenly a multitude of heavenly armies appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, 14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth shalom to men of good will.” We should join them, “Joy to the world…” Shalom shalom.
