RR Psalm 47:1-4(1-3) Part 4

Shalom,

Psalm 47:1(1) For the music director, a psalm for the sons of Korah.
2 Clap your hands, all you peoples! Shout to God with the voice of joy! 3(2) For Adonai Elyon is awesome, a great King over all the earth. 4(3) He shall choose our inheritance for us, the excellency of Jacob whom he loved. Selah.

Just before we “Selah” (pause for a moment and meditate on what has been said, which is worthy of our attention), we learn two things.  First, that God will choose our inheritance for us, and secondly, that inheritance is described as “the excellency of Jacob.”  Finally, Jacob is further described as the object of God’s love, so naturally, the excellency of Jacob would also receive God’s love.

What do we know (from Scripture) about God’s love?  John 3:16a “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…”  Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Messiah died for us. (Isaiah 53:10a,b Yet it pleased Adonai to bruise Him. He caused Him to suffer.)  Romans 8:39b … nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Messiah Yeshua our Lord.

Don’t miss this… Psalm 47, verse 4 is a Messianic prophecy.  Our inheritance IS Messiah Yeshua.  The excellency of Jacob IS Messiah Yeshua.  The Hebrew word translated as “excellency” is “G’on.”  Most frequently it appears as “Ga’on.”  (Rabbi’s note: One of the best known sages is Elijah ben Solomon Zalman, best known as “the Vilna Ga’on." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vilna_Gaon .

Ga’on appears almost 50 times in the Hebrew Scriptures.  It can also be translated as glory.  The “Topical Lexicon” says this about Ga’on.  “Gaʾon (Strong’s 1347) gathers in a spectrum of ideas that run from magnificent splendor to inflated arrogance. Scripture applies it to the matchless greatness of the LORD, to the legitimate glory He confers on His people, and to the sinful self-exaltation that provokes His judgment. About forty-nine occurrences, scattered from Leviticus to Zechariah, display this two-edged usage and furnish a rich theology of glory and pride.”

With this spectrum of meanings, we must watch out, lest we succumb to pride.  Of course, Yeshua was not prideful, (as without sin, He would not be) He was glorious.  However; we on the other hand, as Yeshua’s heirs need to BOLO (be-on-the-lookout).  We must remain thankful to God for choosing our inheritance in Messiah Yeshua.  May we never stop being thankful for such a great blessing.

Colossians 3:15 Let the shalom of Messiah rule in your hearts—to this shalom you were surely called in one body. Also be thankful. 16 Let the word of Messiah dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another with all wisdom in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratitude in your hearts to God. 17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Yeshua, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.  Shalom shalom.
