RR Psalm 55:21-23(20-22) – Part 12

Shalom,

Rabbi Trail: Tikkun America has concluded the Family Conference for 2026 as of Sunday at noon.  Recorded videos of the worship and teaching can be found on Facebook.  Just search Facebook for “Tikkun America.”  This year is the second one I have missed in the last 28 years, but Jan and I watched from Knoxville.  Our friends Jerry and Jo Miller along with Eitan Shishkoff were some of the keynote speakers.  Give a listen to their valuable messages.

_______

Psalm 55:21 My companion put forth his hands against those at peace with him, as he violates his covenant. 22 Smoother than butter was his speech, yet war was in his heart. His words were softer than oil, yet they were drawn swords. 23 Cast your burden on Adonai, and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken.

Yes, “butter!”  This reminds me of the idiom, “Butter wouldn’t melt in his mouth,” meaning, “His words are cold and heartless, lacking sincerity.”  Sometimes friends don’t act like friends.  It is also true that a trusted advisor sometimes violates that trust.  This is exactly what David is writing about.  Ahithophel was an advisor to the king, but turned and became an advisor to the king’s challenger, his third son, Absalom.

For the remainder of this RR, I want to focus on verse 23 (22 in most Christian Bibles).  Psalm 55:23(22) Cast your burden on Adonai, and He will sustain you. He will never let the righteous be shaken.  David is speaking to himself (as he often does), reminding himself of God’s sovereignty.  Peter spoke similar thoughts… 1Peter 5:6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, so that He may lift you up at the appropriate time. 7 Cast all your worries on Him, for He cares for you.

These thoughts on “casting your burdens on Adonai” are found throughout the Scriptures.  Here are four such examples.  First Isaiah, then Paul (to the Philippians), followed by Yeshua (as quoted in Matthew), and finally, David himself.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Surely I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.

Philippians 4:6 Do not be anxious about anything—but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. 7 And the shalom of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Messiah Yeshua.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and ‘you will find rest for your souls.’ 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Psalm 37:25  I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous one forsaken, nor his children begging for bread.

No wonder we’re all worn out.  We’re all carrying burdens God never intended us to carry.  What burden will you lay down today?  One thought that helped me is that our love can’t surpass God’s love.  His love is always perfect.  Shalom shalom.
