RR Psalm 48:5-7 Part 3

Rabbi’s Reflections - Tuesday, March 3, 2026
Shalom,

Psalm 48:5(4) For behold, the kings assembled, they advanced together. 6(5) They saw, then they were astounded, they fled in terror. 7(6) Trembling seized them there, pain like a woman in labor.

When studying scripture piece by piece, it is easy to loose our understanding of the metanarrative.  (Do you need to look it up, I did.). Put succinctly, God is going to prevail against all His enemies.  Specifically, His enemies are those who oppose His rules (found in the Torah) and His reign.  Revelation 11:15 Then the seventh angel trumpeted, and there were loud voices in heaven saying, “The kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Anointed One. And He shall reign forever and ever!”

Here, in our three subject verses of Psalm 48, we find the kings of the earth gathered together as one.  They are “marching” is the word used in our English TLV translation, but the Hebrew says, “They are crossing over.”  They are crossing a “red line” established long ago by God so that God can distinguish between His people and those who are not His people.

These, “not God’s people” kings are marching in unison but they’re about to have a bad day.  They will be astounded and flee in terror.  Our last verse today describes them as they “tremble” with terror, like the waves of pain during transition of a woman in child birth.  These kings have missed the point, that there is only one King, the wise God.

As a proof text, let’s turn to the Doxology, the last 3 verses of the book of Romans… Romans 16:25 Now to the One who is able to strengthen you according to my Good News and the proclamation of Yeshua the Messiah, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages 26 but now is revealed and through the writings of the Prophets has been made known to all the nations, according to the commandment of the eternal God to bring about obedience of faith— 27 to the only wise God, through Yeshua the Messiah, to Him be the glory forever. Amen.  Shalom shalom.
