RR Psalm 65:13,14 Part 7
Shalom,
Psalm 65:13 Pastures of the wilderness overflow and hills are robed with joy. 14 Meadows are clothed with flocks and valleys are covered with grain—they shout for joy, yes, they sing!
What’s this? Pastures, wilderness and hills, then meadows and valleys are all celebrating with characteristics that belong to human people. All of “them” “shout for joy, yes, they sing! And, what are they singing? They are singing the praises of God exactly as the Psalm began. Psalm 65:2 Praise is awaiting You in Zion, O God, and to You the vow will be fulfilled.
Follow this line of thinking. What we’ll discover is that this Psalm contains logical, next step “building blocks.” We’re all very comfortable with praise, but what about that “vow?” In Hebrew it is a “Neder” (as in Kol Nidre, all vows). So, what promise is it that all flesh has promised or vowed to God? The answer is right there in the verse, “praise is awaiting You.” And not just Jewish people, but “all flesh will come.” Psalm 65:3 O You who hear prayer, to You all flesh will come.
What is next? We need to know why all flesh is coming to praise God. That’s the next building block of thought. Psalm 65:4b You will atone for our transgressions. Are you kidding me? This is good news beyond our highest expectation. Our sins are overwhelming, yet God has, is and will provide for our atonement! Of course and without doubt we will joyfully praise God for that. How could we just sit quietly when the death sentence that rightfully must accompany our sin has been pardoned by God through the sacrifice of His only begotten Son?
Isaiah 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray. Each of us turned to his own way. So Adonai has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. 7a He was oppressed and He was afflicted yet He did not open His mouth.
1John 4:10 This is love—not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as an atonement for our sins.
