RR Psalm 68:20 Part 13

Shalom

Psalm 68:20 Blessed be my Lord! Day by day He bears our burdens—the God of our salvation! Selah

Let’s restate the translation emphasizing the Hebrew.  “Bless (Baruch) Adonai (the Hebrew really says “Adonai”) every day!  The God of our salvation (“HaEl” Yeshuatenu), He will bear our burdens (Ya’amas Lanu).  Selah!”  There are several themes stated here, upon which we can devote our attention.

First, God’s name, Adonai, is used again.  This is a plural form that is frequently mistaken for a possessive form.  Our TLV translation even says “my Lord.”  “Adon” is the Hebrew word for master, so the use of God’s name “Adonai” is a way of saying Master of masters.  Also, by definition, masters are obeyed.  We can’t really call God our Master unless we obey him.  That’s the meaning of “Shema Yisrael,” the greatest commandment.

Furthermore; this is the name for God used by Isaiah in his vision of chapter 6… “I see Adonai high and lifted up.”  The vision is of Yeshua.  Isaiah knew Yeshua’s divinity, and so do we.  John confirmed it… John 12:41 Isaiah said these things because he saw His glory and spoke of Him.

Rabbi Trail:  Jewish people know God’s most used name in prayer to be Adonai.  Before I was a believer, I always thought Adonai to be a name for God the Father.  Now, as a follower of Yeshua, I’ve had a reorientation to see that name as a name for Yeshua in the Hebrew Scriptures.  “Baruch Ata Adonai” means “Blessed are You, Yeshua.”

Matthew 21:9 The crowds going before Him and those following kept shouting, saying, “Hoshia-na to Ben-David! Baruch ha-ba b’shem Adonai! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord! Hoshia-na in the highest!”

End RT.

Next, this “Adonai” Who is Yeshua, carries our burdens.  And what would those “burdens” be?  Isaiah told us… Isaiah 53:4a Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our pains.  “Our griefs and pains” are the weight of sin.

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also get rid of every weight and entangling sin. Let us run with endurance the race set before us, 2 focusing on Yeshua, the initiator and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before Him, He endured the cross, disregarding its shame; and He has taken His seat at the right hand of the throne of God.

Yeshua opens His arms wide and invites us to receive this blessing….  Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and ‘you will find rest for your souls.’ 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

How could we dare to believe the world has something better to offer.  Tomorrow, let’s deal with the last two Hebrew words of Psalm 68:20 (HaEl Yeshuatenu)…”the God of our salvation.”  Shalom shalom.
