RR Psalm 68:15-17 Part 10

Shalom,

Psalm 68:15 When Shaddai scattered kings there, it was snowing on Zalmon. 16 Mount Bashan is a mountain of God. Mount Bashan is a mountain of peaks. 17 Why do you gaze with envy, you mountain peaks, at the mountain God desired for His dwelling? Yes, Adonai will dwell there forever!

There is a celebration being reported here.  God is mentioned here by His name, Shaddai, usually translated as “God almighty.”  In Hebrew, a “Shad” is a breast.  The chest is emblematic of the center of power.  So the poet is continuing his celebration of God’s victory over His enemies, who live to the east of Israel.  That’s where “Zalmon” is, east of Zion.  Those mountains of Jordan, also called the mountains of Gilead, are greater than the hills of Israel.

Jeremiah 50:19 I will bring Israel back to his pasture. He will feed on Carmel and Bashan, and his soul will be satisfied on the hills of Ephraim and Gilead.

Inserting God’s victory over “Mount Bashan” is also significant.  The mountains of the east are made of solid volcanic rock (called basalt, where we get the name Bashan).  Not so with the hills of Judea.  Those hills are made of layers of limestone and sandstone, which is much softer.  It is a notable miracle of God that He takes the weaker hills and makes them victorious over the stronger mountains.  He does this to show His power.

2Peter 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and virtue.

Though the mountains of Bashan may seem powerful, God has placed His abode in Mount Zion, which may not ever deserve recognition in the natural, but reigns supreme in the spiritual.

Hebrews 12:18 For you have not come to a mountain that can be touched… 22 But you have come to Mount Zion—to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, a joyous gathering, 23 and to the assembly of the firstborn who are written in a scroll in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous ones made perfect,

Made perfect through the sacrifice of Yeshua.  That’s the victory we continue to celebrate.  Shalom shalom.
