RR Psalm 66:11,12 Part 6

Shalom,

Psalm 66:11 You brought us into a net. You laid a burden on our backs. 12 You caused men to ride over our heads. We went through fire and water. Yet You brought us out to superabundance.

These two verses contain four descriptions of adversity.  First, we are trapped in a net, as if held captive in a prison.  Then, we are described as carrying a heavy burden that strains our loins (translated as “backs”).  Following that, we are oppressed.  The burden has bent us over, so that we can’t lift our heads.  And finally, we are dragged through fire and water.  Rather depressing isn’t it.  That is, until we read what’s next.  The last half of verse 12 proclaims the victory of deliverance unto overflowing abundance.

God takes us through fire, where we are not burned, and water, the flood where we are not drowned.  (Yes, there is a Scripture for that.)  Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, or through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, nor will the flame burn you.

We may be oppressed, but our destiny is not oppression.  We may be trapped and confined, but our destiny is not entrapment.  Then what is our destiny?  It is nothing less than freedom in Messiah Yeshua.  John 8:35  Now the slave does not remain in the household forever; the son abides forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed!

Sure, that all sounds good.  You know, saved up for eternity with Messiah Yeshua.  You might say, “Do we have to wait?  What about a blessing for today?”  Yes, Scripture has a promise for today too.  Yeshua spoke these words 2,000 years ago.  Its an invitation for us all today, 2,000 years later.

Matthew 11:28 “Come to Me, all who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and ‘you will find rest for your souls.’ 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

The Hebrew word translated as “superabundance” in our subject verse, is the same word used to describe our cup in Psalm 23.  That cup is overflowing and so are we, if we will receive it today.  Shalom shalom.
