RR Hate By David Harwood

Have you ever wondered what emotions are going on in God that motivate His wrath? They are love and hate.
What Yeshua loved and hated was part of what made Him wonderful.
Hebrews 1 strongly establishes Yeshua’s identity. Briefly, Yeshua is the heir of creation, the One through whom the Father created, and He is higher than all angels. He is God’s radiance and exact image. In addition, Yeshua is our priest who made purification for our sins and is seated at God’s right hand, sharing the place of supreme authority. Hebrews 1 also quotes Psalm 45 about this bridegroom King, calling Him the enthroned, eternal God.
But regarding the Son He says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, and a scepter of uprightness is the scepter of Your Kingdom. You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness; therefore God, Your God, has anointed You with the oil of gladness above Your companions” (Hebrews 1:8–9).
In establishing the Son’s identity, Hebrews 1 primarily focuses upon His nature and role. But I want to highlight something I find to be important: these verses are windows into the emotional life of the Son.
The quoted psalm extols the attractive nature of our King.
You are the most handsome of the sons of men. Grace pours from your lips. Therefore God has blessed you forever. Gird your sword on your thigh, O mighty one, in your splendor and your majesty. (Psalm 45:3–4)
First, I’d like to point out that His love of righteousness and hatred of wickedness is praised by the Father and loved by those who know Him. It is the reason for the anointing of joy placed upon the enthroned Son, who is God. Next, please consider that part of what makes Him attractive (handsome) is what He loves and what He hates.
It is easy for me to relate to Messiah’s love as the primary aspect of His beauty. But hatred? This is a strong emotion because it is motivated by His powerful love. In this age, in Yeshua, one is not complete without the other.
His hatred is beautiful because His hatred has righteous reasons. Because Yeshua loves what is righteous, He hates wickedness. What are some things the Messiah hates? Why does He hate them? What of His hatred expressed as wrath at the end of this age?
There is too much to cover in a blog post, but I’ll try to simplify without being superficial. His hatred in the present is a personal, deeply felt animosity. It is directed toward what is enumerated in Proverbs 6, things that harm people, rooted in pride.
Six things Adonai hates, yes, seven are abominations to Him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that plots wicked schemes, feet that run to evil, a false witness who spouts lies, and one who stirs up strife among brothers. (Proverbs 6:16–19)
What a description of unrighteousness! What a picture of the cultures of this world! Is Yeshua pleased with what He sees? No. He hates it. And He hates it now. He is angry with it, and at the end of days, when all evil peaks, He will pour out His wrath upon this wickedness.
This is the age wherein mercy is offered. Before the next age begins, God’s wrath reaches its zenith. This revealed anger is a manifestation of supreme hatred. It will respond to the fullness of ferocious wickedness manifested through the man called the feral Beast of prey (thērion), whose followers are energized by the same spirit. His hate does not detract from His beauty. It motivates the King to go to war.
We currently live in “this present evil age” (Galatians 1:4b). Does Yeshua hate this age? He does. It is wicked. It is hateful. And when this age’s evil reaches its climax, He shall return and bring it to an end, and He will burn and renew the earth.
God’s kingdom is presently experienced as “righteousness, shalom and joy in the Ruach ha-Kodesh” (Romans 14:17b). Through the active presence of the coming King, it is thriving within this present malevolent age.
Good news! The evil beings who empower this wicked darkness will be removed. The structures they’ve built will be dismantled. Yeshua’s love of righteousness and His visceral hatred of wickedness will be revealed. His love and His hatred are part of His glory. It is a way His beauty is revealed.
But in the middle of the night there was a shout, “Look, the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!” (Matthew 25:6).
