Psalm 38:9,10(8,9) Part 5
Shalom {{firstName}},
Psalm 38:9 I am numb and utterly crushed. I groan because of anguish in my heart. 10 My Lord, all my longing is before You, and my sighing is not hidden from You.
About half of the 150 Psalms are attributed to King David. In these Psalms of David, he wrote in poetic form his prayerful expressions to God and by reading what he wrote, we, then, have insight into the man that had a deep and lasting relationship with our heavenly Father. The prophet Samuel described David to King Saul, saying… 1Samuel 13:14b Adonai has sought for Himself a man after His own heart. Ultimately, God would bring forth His only begotten Son from the lineage of King David.
These are the words the prophet Nathan spoke to King David as he approached his death. 2Samuel 7:12 When your days are done and you sleep with your fathers, I will raise up your seed, who will come forth from you after you, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He will build a house for My Name, and I will establish his royal throne forever. This could be Solomon, until we get to “forever.” Then it applies to David’s greater Son.
King David’s written prayers are foundational evidence of the relationship he had with God. That relationship, like all other healthy relationships, is based on trust. Faith is a word that serves as a substitute for trust. Our faith in God is the product of a healthy relationship with our heavenly Father. All healthy relationships require communication. That sets the stage for a deeper study of our verses for today.
In Psalm 38 verse 9, David seems to have reached a plateau in expressing the details of his suffering before God, in saying he is “numb, crushed and anguish(ed).” But why did he say all this in the first place? Does God really need to know the details of David’s suffering? After all, doesn’t God already know everything? Nothing is ever “new” to God, so why do we feel compelled to pray?
Now you should see where this is going. We pray because prayer is the communication which is the foundation of our relationship of faith with our heavenly Father. And that’s exactly David’s next thought… Psalm 38:10
My Lord, all my longing is before You, and my sighing is not hidden from You. This “longing” is the same Hebrew word as Eve’s carnal desire for the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. So we can see this word for “longing” or “desire” can have both good and evil connotations. Our maturity is expressed when we see that God reciprocates our desire for Him. Song 7:11(10) I am my lover’s, and his desire is for me.
Now, let’s close with these well known verses. Proverbs 3:5 Trust in Adonai with all your heart, lean not on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. 7 Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear Adonai and turn away from evil. 8 It will be healing to your body and refreshment to your bones. Shalom shalom.
