RR Psalm 33:8,9,10 Part 5
(Early) Shabbat Shalom,
Psalm 33:8 Let all the earth fear Adonai. Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. 9 For He spoke, and it came to be. He commanded, and it stood firm. 10 Adonai foils the purpose of the nations. He thwarts the plans of the peoples.
The Hebrew of verse 9 states, “V’Hu Amar Va’ye’hi,” meaning “And He spoke and it happened.” Previously, verses 4 and 6 both refer to the power of God “speaking the world into existence.” Here is a rabbinic tale I have not shared in a long time.
Rabbi Trail: As the rabbis were studying the giving of the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, one rabbi proclaimed, “God is so powerful that He only needed to give Moses the First Commandment, and by His power, God caused Moses to know all the other nine instantly.”
As they were known to do, another rabbi chimed in to say, “Even better, God is so powerful that He only had to speak the first word of the First Commandment before Moses instantly knew the rest of the first commandment and all the rest of the other nine.”
To complete the contest of “one-up-man-ship”, and to get in the last word, a third rabbi chimed in… “Even better, God is so powerful that He only needed to speak the first letter of the first word, and Moses instantly heard it and knew the entire first word, and all the rest of the Ten Commandments.”
None of the other rabbis could top that, but they all laughed because they knew the first letter of the first word is the silent letter, Aleph. End RT.
The last Hebrew word of verse ten is “Mach’sh’vot” which is plural for thoughts (translated as “plans”). It is related etymologically to “Choshev” which means “I think.”
Special Note: the Hebrew word for “computer” is “Mach’shev.” It is the thinking machine. End SN.
Our thinking and our plans do not impress God until we line up with His own… Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans that I have in mind for you,” declares Adonai, “plans for shalom and not calamity—to give you a future and a hope.” God wants to set us on His highway. (We have so many highways today, we tend to undervalue what is being said here. God’s “high way” has no potholes.) Isaiah 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways.” It is a declaration of Adonai. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
The Heavens declare the glory of God… Psalm 19:2(1b) The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky shows His handiwork. 3(2) Day to day they speak, night to night they reveal knowledge. So then, all men are without excuse… Romans 1:20 His invisible attributes—His eternal power and His divine nature—have been clearly seen ever since the creation of the world, being understood through the things that have been made. So people are without excuse— 21 for even though they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. Instead, their thinking became futile, and their senseless hearts were made dark. 22 Claiming to be wise, they became fools.
I’m cutting this off here, but take note of this and don’t be one of the fools just mentioned. Isaiah 43:2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, or through the rivers, they will not overflow you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned, nor will the flame burn you. 3a For I am Adonai your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. Shalom shalom.
