Shalom,

The Upper Room Discourse (part 42 of ???)

John 15:26 “When the Helper comes—whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father—He will testify about Me. 27 And you also testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning.”

Today we finish John, chapter 15 that we started with verse 1 back on September 5th.  Since then, we have broken the chapter into 18 parts.  Here, in our subject verses above, John has recorded Yeshua’s promise to us all.  He promises to send us a Helper.

Yeshua also deeply identifies personally with both the Father and the Holy Spirit.  John 14:16a I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper… 17 the Spirit of truth,… will be in you. 18b… I will come to you.  And Yeshua also clearly states that He and the Father are one.  John 10:30 “I and the Father are one.” (That statement almost got Him stoned.)

Yeshua is presenting the triune nature of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.  Yeshua, the Son, is in the middle of everything.  It’s interesting to me that He calls the Holy Spirit the “Spirit of Truth.”  John 16:13 But when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on His own; but whatever He hears, He will tell you. And He will declare to you the things that are to come. (But we are not there yet, because that is in John 16.)

Yeshua is making this teaching a priority near the end of His life.  You should know by now that He only says what is important and most relevant at any moment.  Why do we need to know about this “Helper,” this “Spirit of Truth?”  There are two ways to live, by our wits, or by the leading of the Holy Spirit.  To live by our wits is to live by the fruit of knowledge of the tree of good and evil.  To live by the leading of the Holy Spirit is to live by the fruit of the tree of life.

The Spirit of Truth is sent to us with the testimony of Yeshua.  There is no command greater than “Shema”, and Shema means listen.  To whom shall we listen?  Shall we listen to ourselves?  Should we listen to Satan.  You already know, we should listen to the voice of God, and He is speaking today through the Holy Spirit.  Choose wisely my friends.
