Our Congregational Declaration – part 2: Yesterday we began a series titled “Our Congregational Declaration.” I want to apologize, not for the title itself, but because the title doesn’t properly reflect my intention. My intention is not to draw attention to the declaration, but rather to draw attention to our desire that we reflect His character in all that we are, both individually and as a community. Maybe today’s title should be “The Reflection Of God’s Character- part 2.”
Enough about that, but still speaking about character, there is a tendency in and among Messianics to defend our doctrine so fiercely, that we willingly sacrifice the character of anyone who dares to disagree with us. Don’t make me name names. Just take it as a warning not to become that. Relationships and fellowship ARE the work of God, not what we do when we’re done with the work of God.
1 John 4:7 Loved ones, let us love one another, for love is from God. Everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 8 The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
Our standard for love is Yeshua, Who, while He was dying on the cross spoke this blessing over His enemies. Luke 23:34a But Yeshua was saying, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” This is so different from, “Father, they’re hurting me, send Your army to do them in.” Sadly, the history of Christianity is not filled with stories of those who sought the redemption, blessing and benefit of their enemies.
Yet it is critical to hold people accountable. This must be done in a loving and reassuring environment, so that faith and relationships are both increased. There is so much more on this subject, but as Scarlet O’Hara said, “Tomorrow is another day.” I like Orphan Annie’s quote too, “Tomorrow… you’re only a day away.” Until then, shalom my friends.
