Rabbi’s Reflections – Wednesday, November 10, 2021

The names of the 12 tribes of Israel come from the names of the 12 sons of Jacob.  This is our heritage (both Jewish and non-Jewish followers of Yeshua).  Ephesians 3:6 This mystery is that the Gentiles are joint heirs and fellow members of the same body and co-sharers of the promise in Messiah Yeshua through the Good News.

Rabbi Trail:  Did Paul write Ephesians by accident?  Is his choice of words intentional?  “Joint heirs,” with whom?  “Fellow members,” with whom?  “Co-sharers” with whom?  Some imaginary people who sinned away the grace of God?  Just look back one chapter.  Ephesians 2:13 But now in Messiah Yeshua, you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of the Messiah. 14a For He is our shalom, the One who made the two into one and broke down the middle wall of separation…. 16 and to reconcile both to God in one body through the cross—by which He put the hostility to death. 17 And He came and proclaimed shalom to you who were far away and shalom to those who were near— 18 for through Him we both have access to the Father by the same Ruach.  “Made two into one” and “we both have access” mean there is no replacement of Israel (Jewish people) by non-Jewish people, but inclusion with Israel.

All that to say that the identity formed through the names of the twelve tribes is important to the identity of both Jewish and non-Jewish people.

You want your identity in Messiah?  You have done well.  Messiah also takes His identity in Israel.  (Sidelight: Anybody watching “The Chosen?”  https://watch.angelstudios.com/thechosen Watch that series, or read the Bible, either or both, and then answer me, does Yeshua have a Jewish identity?)  Yeshua is the greatest Jew Who ever lived.

And the greatest evangelist in history is Paul, who says of himself,… Acts 21:39a Paul said, “I am a Jewish man.”  Don’t you think Paul had long enough (by the time we get to the 21st chapter of Acts) to figure out he was a Christian and no longer Jewish (if that were the case)?  This whole long “Rabbi Trail” has one purpose, to convince you that the identity of both Jewish and non-Jewish followers of Yeshua is caught up with the identity of the 12 Tribes of Israel.  End RT.

Reuben: The first son born to Jacob (Leah #1) was named Reuben.  Genesis 29:32 Leah became pregnant and gave birth to a son and named him Reuben because she said, “For Adonai has seen my affliction. Surely now my husband will love me.”  “Re’u” means “we see.”  We can see life, or we can see death.  But the rest of Reuben’s name is “Ben” meaning “son.”  The life of the believer begins when he/she sees the Son.

Feel the moment here.  Yeshua is on trial for His life.  He already knows how this is going to end.  The high priest is publicly interrogating Him.  Mark 14: 61 But keeping silent, Yeshua did not answer. Again the kohen gadol questioned Him, “Are you Mashiach, Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Yeshua, “and you shall see ‘the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Powerful One,’ and ‘coming with the clouds of heaven’!”  When Yeshua said “I am,” that was enough.  Any man says “I am” in Hebrew “Ani.”  God says “I am” in Hebrew “Anochi.”  That’s the first word of the first commandment. (See Exodus 20:2)  Although we don’t have the original Hebrew book of Mark, I believe Yeshua answered “Anochi,” and that was enough to make the high priest tear his clothes.

But Yeshua wasn’t finished.  He went on to say “And you shall see the Son of Man….”  Yeshua is quoting Daniel 7:13 “I was watching in the night visions. Behold, One like a Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days, and was brought into His presence.” And He is quoting Psalm 110:1 A psalm of David. Adonai declares to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for Your feet.”

When God opens our eyes, we see the Son, and our new life begins.  Today must be “Ephesians Day.”  Ephesians 4:22 With respect to your former lifestyle, you are to lay aside the old self corrupted by its deceitful desires, 23 be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and put on the new self—created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.

This is true for me, how about for you?  To see the Son, your eyes have to opened by God.  Do you want that?  Ask Him to allow you to see His Son.  From the day I saw, really saw, the Son, everything in my life has been different (for the better).  What a difference He’s made in my life.  Do you agree?

Week 46
Memory Verse: 2 Corinthians 4:7 But we have this treasure in jars of clay, so that the surpassing greatness of the power may be from God and not from ourselves. 8 We are hard pressed in every way, yet not crushed; perplexed, yet not in despair; 9 persecuted, yet not forsaken; struck down, yet not destroyed; 10 always carrying in the body the death of Yeshua, so that the life of Yeshua may also be revealed in our mortal body.
