Rabbi’s Reflections – Tuesday, January 23, 2024
Shalom,

Rabbi Trail: What started on January 11, 2023 comes to a conclusion today.  Amazing!  Rabbi’s note: Part 1 is not called part 1.  When I wrote it, I was still praying if it should be a series.  January 12th is called “Part 2.”  Today we end with part 265.  End RN.  If you read them all, give yourself an accomplishment badge.  If you need to catch up on any old ones or want to read the commentary on any particular verses, go to www.syknox.org/blog and dig in.  Maybe someday I’ll tag them by verse (or maybe one of you will volunteer to help), so they will be easier to look up. End RT.

Salutations and Summary, part 15 – Romans, part 265
Conclusion

Like any good composition (letter, paper, article, book or even a piece of music), Paul is building a message to make a point.  In other words, he is pointing toward a conclusion.  After much study, I’m sure his conclusion is, “Obey God and love each other well.”

It is a conclusion he makes repeatedly in his other letters too.  Ephesians 4:15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in all ways into Messiah, who is the Head. 16b The proper working of each individual part produces the body’s growth, for building itself up in love.  In Romans, Paul takes 3 1/2 chapters to emphasize his conclusion.  Here are a few excerpts…

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world… so that you may discern what is the will of God.…  9 Let love be without hypocrisy—detesting what is evil, holding fast to the good.  Paul is specifically addressing our situation in the world today, about 2,000 years in advance.  The “world” is seductive, and deception is rampant.  There is evil and there is good.  Today, we are confronted with an “upside down” existence in which good is called evil and evil is called good.  Yeshua, Himself, prophesied over this….

Matthew 24:21 For then there will be great trouble, such as has not happened since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. 22 And unless those days were cut short, no one would be delivered. But for the sake of the chosen, those days will be cut short. 23 “Then if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here’s the Messiah,’ or ‘There He is,’ do not believe it. 24 For false messiahs and false prophets will rise up and show great signs and wonders so as to lead astray, if possible, even the chosen.

Yeshua is warning us to guard against deception.  So is Paul in many other places… 1Corinthians 3:18 Let no one deceive himself.  Colossians 2:4 I am telling you this so that no one will deceive you with persuasive-sounding arguments.

We are all “building a spiritual house” as we dedicate our lives to God and His purposes.  Be a wise master builder.  Matthew 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

Why not give Peter the last word in a series on the Letter of Paul to the Romans.  1Peter 2:5 you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house—a holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Messiah Yeshua.  Through love, Yeshua has made us living stones so that we can love Him back and reflect His love to other stones.  May we all receive the double portion of His goodness.  Shalom shalom.
